So, I just read this post from a blog called Margaret and Helen. I hope that when I am their age I am an eighth as witty. I can’t even paraphrase the post regarding Palin’s abdication is so, so rad:
“I would cut her some slack but she used up all her slack with me while on the campaign trail. This is the woman who called the parts of the country where I don’t live more Pro-American than the part where I do live. She stirred up crowds across the country to the point that McCain campaign stops frequently resembled a lynch mob. She mixes religion and politics like I mix gin and tonic but then calls for less government involvement. Freedom from government is her battle cry until a vagina gets involved and then watch how much involvement she wants. Show me a woman who is making a private medical decision to end a pregnancy and I’ll show you a Palin screaming for more government involvement.” These ladies are totally going to be linked from my blog (tho mine pales in comparison!).

So, apparently we aren’t as advanced as a civilization as I had hoped…

“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” John Duesler, President of the Valley Swim Club. Creative Steps Day Camp kids were on their way to enjoy a great day of swimming, but they were turned away at the door…Why? Because of their complexion. I would have thought that as a country we were beyond this. I hated to see these kids trying to explain why it was they were turned away–that somehow the fact that they were a different color than the other members was a threat. Here is a link to the story. I am sure we will all be hearing more about this.

Side note: there are some things that are truly not news on a national level–things that are simply local crimes or sensationalism. This is a national news story without a doubt. The fact that we are holding these types of prejudices at this point in human history is unacceptable and deserves all possible publicity.

So, health insurance is a total crock in this country

I just read this article about how a woman lost her health care coverage. It is not just that our insurance companies are out of control profit hogs, but this current health insurance structure completely undermines any hope of economic vitality in this country. It even undermines the idea of the “American Dream.” If, for example, my health care coverage wasn’t tied to my job, I would probably be starting a small business, perhaps employing other people. The fact that when someone even has health insurance, but then get sick is likely to be quickly unemployed–whereupon they will quickly lose their health insurance, is a travesty in the United States. Perhaps it is time to go a bit crazy here and advocate for universal health insurance coverage? That might just pull us out of this recession/depression…
